What has “stare” done for me?
What has the stare method done for me? Well, it’s created a bridge to the real world. It’s enabled me to gain real-world positive feedback that has served to re-program my belief-system - and in turn, allowed me to build my self-esteem and confidence.
It was (and still is, to a lesser extent) a stop-gap that dealt with my real-life encounters (in a rather crude fashion) until my self-esteem was strong enough to take over. It was a buffer consisting of a series of cumbersome, mechanical, methodical steps - crude, but effective. However, in the end, it is my self-esteem and confidence that will ultimately deal with the real world.
So there you have it – my secret little cheat to cross that huge abyss and gain a foothold on the other side.
As I mentioned before; it’s not ideal, and it’s not for everyone. It certainly has it’s flaws and cannot successfully be used for every social situation, but it has carried me through some of the worst.
What is the secret to succeeding with this method? Well, I would have to say it all comes down to determination and hard work. You have to really want it. For me, it was a long difficult process. Change came very slowly.
Why did it work? Well, it allowed me to change the way I looked at the world, how I looked at myself, and how I reacted to society. It forced me to look at situations in a more realistic way and to become more aware of how I was behaving, not how the rest of society was behaving. In a nut-shell, it got me out of my introverted and distorted thought patterns by linking me to the real world.
And in the end, it built my self-esteem, confidence, and natural coping mechanisms that so many take for granted. In short, it made me feel good about myself – and I have never, ever, felt that.
Did this cure me of social anxiety disorder? No, it did not.
Was this the only coping mechanism I used? No, there were others.
I’ll talk about them in upcoming posts. For now, I’m going to write about several real-life experiences in which I used the stare method…
